Weight Loss Program Frequently Asked Questions

What is Medical Weight Loss?
Before discussing what it is, it probably makes sense to start with what it is not. Medical weight loss is not surgery or diet pills. It is physician-directed weight management based on medical scientific principles that target the root causes of obesity and weight gain to achieve and sustain a healthy weight.
Does the program include weight loss surgery?
No. The Center for Medical Weight Loss program is strictly a non-surgical approach to weight loss and weight maintenance.
Will I be able to keep the weight off after the program?
There is no more effective program than the Center for Medical Weight Loss. In a recent study on 349 patients, virtually 100% maintained weight loss after 1 year and 97% after 2 years.
Is the weight loss program safe if I have diabetes or any other medical conditions?
Not only are The Center for Medical Weight Loss programs safe for people with diabetes, hypertension, and other medical problems - they are helpful in controlling any further complications that result from these diseases. More than this, CMWL weight loss programs can help alleviate many of the other conditions that result from obesity, including arthritis, coronary artery disease, sleep apnea, persistent lymph edema, lower extremity edema, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
How does the program work?
The program is structured in three main phases: Quick Start, Transition, and Maintenance. Each phase has four components – food, activity, behavior, and medication – that are personalized based on your unique goals and needs. The food and behavioral components are core to the program; activity and medication prescriptions are suggested when the doctor feels they are safe and appropriate. It’s important to understand that there is no ‘one size fits all’ with the medical weight loss program. Because you are unique, your certified medical weight loss doctor will create a personalized plan just for you based on your specific attributes and weight loss challenges.
How is the Medical Weight Loss program different from other programs?
There are two primary differences you will find compared to other weight loss programs. First, our program is physician-supervised. Our doctors, who are extensively trained in the medical science of weight loss, can treat your weight within the context of your total health profile. Because of this they have tools and resources that other programs do not, such as the ability to adjust medications hindering your weight loss progress. Second, our program does not focus on just one aspect of weight loss. We take a comprehensive, holistic approach that includes food, exercise, and behavioral modification. Weight loss and weight maintenance is a way of life. Our doctors understand this and will be there to support you every step of the way in achieving your goals.
Do I have to exercise on the program?
There is no requirement for exercise, but research consistently shows that exercise increases the likelihood of maintaining a healthy weight. Should you decide to pursue an exercise routine, with your doctor’s permission, the program will offer activity recommendations based on your body composition and physical abilities.
Do I have to take weight loss medication?
There is no medication requirement. However, if you consent, your doctor can prescribe a safe appetite suppressant to keep hunger at bay as you lose weight. Your doctor can also adjust any current medications you might be taking for another condition, but that may also be interfering with your weight loss efforts.
How much does the program cost?
Program costs vary depending on the weight loss plan designed for you. Most people feel its very affordable especially compared to other popular and less effective weight loss programs. The initial consultation fees is just $29. At your initial consultation you will receive a full Body Composition Analysis report and a suggested personalized weight loss plan from the doctor. There is no obligation to continue with the program following your initial consultation.
Does my insurance cover any of the weight loss program's cost?
Many isurances cover obesity counseling and treatments for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above if they see a primary care physician with specialized training in obesity (like ours). If you have health insurance, we will check your insurance for more details on what your insurance will cover.
How quickly can I expect to see results?
Though it depends on your specific circumstances and health concerns, most patients lose weight within the first two weeks and continue to reduce their weight as they continue with the plan and counseling.
What if I only need to lose 10-15 pounds?
Programs at CMWL weight loss centers are not simply for people who are extremely overweight, but are for anyone who is unhappy or feels unhealthy due to their weight. We will tell you if you don't need to lose weight or if you don't qualify for CMWL weight loss programs for any reason. Our first priority is your overall health and well being.
What can I expect on my initial visit?
Your visit starts with the doctor asking for your medical history, including any prescription or over-the-counter medication you may be taking. It’s very important for your CMWL doctor to understand your overall health when designing your personalized plan.

The doctor use specialized equipment to perform a Body Composition Analysis (BCA) that will give you a total breakdown of the percentages of fat, muscle, and water in your body. Your resting metabolism and blood pressure will also be taken. This gives your doctor a baseline of where you’ll start your weight loss plan.

Finally, your Doctor will review your medical history and BCA results, and then will sit down to get to know you. This is the time to open up about your weight loss goals and challenges, and what you truly want to get out of a weight loss plan. In order for your Doctor to design your personalized plan, he or she needs to get to know the whole you.

At the end of your visit, you'll have a plan, personalized just for you! If you decide to move ahead with your personalized weight loss plan, you’ll not only be following a medically proven weight loss approach, but you’ll be building a relationship with your doctor, who will be your greatest support throughout the process.
